The parlor boasts Joel and Erika Snayd's trademark style. At the windows, Moroccan-inspired wood screens (thrift shop finds) allow privacy as well as interesting light patterns. The vintage stenciled-zebra cowhide rug and leather upholstered occasional chairs and ottoman anchor the space with touches of black. Joel chose the mirror-top cocktail table for its reflective quality.
"I'm a modernist at heart but cherish historic preservation, so I integrate the two," he says. "In this house, the inspiration came from the need to infuse energy into a dark, lifeless space. Plus, we wanted our youth reflected throughout our home." Joel and Erika transformed the space and found the balance they were seeking by using shades of white and taupe; colorful, graphic wall coverings; and eclectic mix of furniture; and bright accent pieces.
The living room's design evolved from a piano inherited from Joel's parents. "Its the only spot the piano would fit," Joel says, "so we made it work by letting wallpaper ground it and add rich context." Joel aged new mirrors by etching and scraping away the backing.
With high ceilings, exposed joists, and ebony-stained wood floors, the third-floor office is a favorite space for Erika and Joel. "It best represents our individual style - clean and modern, with a mid-century sensibility," Joel Says.
"We view our house as a living space that is always evolving. Its our canvas, and we have fun with it." - Homeowner Joel Snayd
"We wanted to re-create an elegant house but not to take ourselves too seriously." -Joel Snayd
